Some people don’t just have jobs; they have a passion. Recently, the Seafood Xpress team had the distinct honour of visiting a true "Legend of the Sea"—Kadir Dilgil, the mastermind behind Mersin's most celebrated culinary landmark, Balikci Kadir.

Exactly 50 years... A milestone that, for Master Kadir, translates into pre-dawn starts, freezing waters, and a lifetime dedicated to the ocean.

Born in the Chill of the Morning

Kadir Dilgil’s story began 50 years ago as a young boy in a traditional fish market. Master Kadir didn’t learn his trade from books; he mastered it from the ground up—gutting fish, battling the winter cold, and learning to identify the freshest catch purely by scent and touch.

To truly know a fish, you must first touch it," Master Kadir shares. "If you cannot look at a fish and know the brightness in its eyes or the firmness of its texture, you cannot survive this trade.

From London back to Mersin

Years later, Master Kadir’s journey brought him to London, where he brought his decades of Mediterranean expertise into the UK's diverse food scene by running a premium fishmonger shop.

Eventually, he returned home to Mersin, bringing all that global experience and deep fish mastery straight into the local restaurant scene. His goal was simple: to establish the finest and most honest seafood restaurant in Mersin, Balikci Kadir.

The Birth of a Legend

And he did exactly that. Today, Balikci Kadir is the absolute first stop for any seafood lover. During our visit, we had the privilege of experiencing his legendary hospitality first hand, enjoying an unforgettable feast of perfectly grilled fresh sea bass, crispy calamari, and succulent prawns. Every single bite reflected 50 years of pure mastery.
